A Master’s or Ph.D. program at the University of Delaware in the United States in 2023 is currently open. The University of Delaware (UD) Department of Plant and Soil Sciences offers a fully funded master’s degree or a Ph.D. position in agriculture in a controlled environment, particularly indoor vertical farming or space cultivation. These positions are expected to start in February 2024 (spring) or between June and September 2024 (summer or fall). Students with a strong background in horticulture, plant science, or related fields are eligible to apply. 

UD is a prestigious national R1 institution located on the East Coast in Newark, Delaware. The campus is conveniently located just two hours from New York City and Washington, D.C. It’s only an hour from Philadelphia. The centerpiece of our research is the Delaware Indoor Agriculture Laboratory (DIAL), which is equipped with a state-of-the-art tunable LED lighting system and environmentally controlled growth chambers. This is a fully funded opportunity. Tuition fees for selected students will also be covered. All international students are welcome to apply.

Purpose of research

  • Environment and Nutrient Interactions: Examine the dynamic interactions between environmental conditions and nutrient solutions to understand their effects on the growth and quality of indoor hydroponic food crops.
  • Superior lighting: We focus on optimizing lighting systems for space cultivation with the aim of increasing both the productivity and nutritional quality of leafy vegetables.

Eligibility Criteria for Master’s or Ph.D. program at  the University of Delaware, USA 2023

  • GRE is not required. Foreign applicants must submit their TOEFL or IELTS scores. 
  • Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field by their desired start date. 
  • To apply for a Ph.D., applicants must have a master’s degree in a related field. 
  • Research experience in areas such as controlled agriculture (indoor or greenhouse), floriculture, LED horticultural lighting, plant physiology, and plant nutrition is preferred. 
  • Applicants must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds), work effectively within a diverse team, and be available to work select weekends and holidays. 
  • Students must have oral and written communication skills. 
  • Peer-reviewed publications are considered a plus. 
  • Applicants must possess skills such as a strong work ethic, commitment to research, close attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and time management.
